Performances include "Hope is a Story that Soars," a 30-minute multimedia presentation by Stories That Soar (inspired by 16 pieces of writing submitted by the community), an Emily D poetry slam by Logan Phillips and TYPS, performance by musician Daniel Slipetsky, and a reading of Dickinson's poems in Spanish by fabulous high school poets Sam and Alma. Nineteen of Tucson's best youth poets came together for the first-ever all-city championship on a beautiful sunny afternoon! The event was the culmination of the Tucson Youth Poetry Slam's (TYPS) inaugural 2010-2011 season, and also the grand finale of the UA Poetry Center's "Young at Art" festival. Seven different high schools from all sides of the city were represented on the mic. Months in the making, the championship showcased the amazing power and positive energy of the TYPS for all to see.

TYPS results April 2011

Another record breaker! More poets attended the workshop with Christopher Lane from Sedona than any previous TYPS workshop. Over 20 were there. Then at TYPS Committee we discussed youth beginning to host upcoming slams (Luis Borboa hosts with Maya Asher on 5/21, holla!), the First Annual TYPS Championship (number of poets allowed in, sign-up process; separate post on that in the coming days), and more.

Over 10 of the 19 total poets were slamming for the first time, but they brought the heat! One of them, Amber Degard (Desert View HS) took second in the competition, not easy for a rookie! The winner, Enrique Garcia, began competing just last month. The lone slammer from Pueblo this month is also a participant in Nuestra Voz, an initiative of the YWCA Tucson's Racial Justice Program. Garcia came big in the first round, then read a group poem with fellow NV student Adriana Garcia before the featured poets' set. Congratulations, to Enrique, Amber and Clarissa Holguin from Tucson Magnet HS! You all rocked it, as did so many that night.

Our features were Jacob Seeman and Kaia Placa of the Young Voices Be Heard program in Sedona, Arizona. Long-time program participants and writers in their own right, Jacob and Kaia threw down a set that was both nuanced and visceral, very impressed in whole. Hope to see you all again soon! Thanks to Christopher Lane for his inspiring workshop and work in coordinating YVBH.

Another cool thing happened this time: the TYPS community continued to coalesce, embracing both new first-time slammers and colleagues from other schools. This is the most important part of the TYPS. An open community is a powerful community.

Desert View HS had a very strong showing this TYPS. A lot of credit for this goes to the poetry club that students formed after the TYPS Spark event at the school in March. Organized by teacher and OLE Board Member Taylor Johnson, the event offered a mix of performances and workshops by poet and TYPS coordinator Logan Phillips. Their club is so cool, I'm not sure if I am even to mention the name of it! Ask the TYPS poets from DVHS about it. They're onto something.

What a big night! It felt like the TYPS really came into its own last night. There were more schools represented than ever before, more workshoppers than ever before, and more poets competing in the slam than ever before. Not only that, but there was a noticeable improvement in the quality of the work performed. TYPS poets take risks on the mic, speaking to the events and issues that effect not only themselves, but also their communities. And of course there is plenty of room to be ridicules, also!

Maya led the workshop at 5pm and made the participants practice performance in the face of the traffic noise of Campbell Ave. No easy feat! Our featured poet was Howard Smith, from Tucson by way of New York. The crowd loved his performance and we hear that he is going to continue to be involved in the TYPS while he's here in Tucson! Kicking off the night was Sarah Gonzales, who is the director of the Nuestra Voz program at the YWCA of Tucson. Chicana X they call her!

Also, importantly, we had our first TYPS Committee Meeting at 6pm. The TYPS is now transitioning to being completely youth-run and youth-led. Sammy Dominguez volunteered to run the camera at the slam and Trevor Lawrence volunteered to run the TYPS YouTube Channel. The decision was made to continue the TYPS through the summer with youth co-hosts. Starting in May, the TYPS will be held on 3rd Saturdays (instead of 2nd Saturdays as we did this spring). This was all discussed and voted on. The TYPS Committee is going to become increasingly active in the next few months. Come early on Sat. 4/9 to be a part of it.

If you missed February's slam, you missed something huge! Standing room only crowd! Myrlin Hepworth! Phoenetic Spit. All amazing. We had poets from Tucson High, Desert View and City High on the mic for the first time, and they came out in a big way. Great to see so many schools represented. It is held weekly at Pueblo HS, Sunnyside HS and Palo Verde HS and is an iniative of the YWCA Racial Justice program. ¡The TYPS Receives $2,000 Grant in Support of 2011 Programming!

We are thrilled to announce that the Tucson Youth Poetry Slam (TYPS) has been selected as a recipient of a 2011 Small Project Grant from the Every Voice in Action Foundation! EViAF is a long-time proponent of youth-led projects in Tucson, and their support has been fundamental in getting the TYPS off the ground over the last 18 months. The $2,000 grant will be used to

partially fund the regular monthly slams, reducing our reliance on donations, (build events)
make matching funds available to schools to bring teaching poets into classrooms, (spark events)
work with the UA Poetry Center to kick off the First Annual Tucson Youth Poetry Slam Championship on 4/30/11, including a special workshop from acclaimed poet Patricia Smith.

We appreciate this important vote of confidence in our youth-led poetry community. In mid-March we will begin a two week fundraising campaign to cover the remaining costs associated with the Championship.

Another great slam! The poets from Sunnyside HS dominated again, though many poets from Sonoran Science Academy participated in the workshop with Logan Phillips and a few also competed on the mic. And special props to our middle school participant from Mansfeld MS! Slam co-hosted by Logan Phillips and Maya Asher.

Ladies and gentlemen, crazies of all kinds, IT'S SUMMERTIME! That means: one, no school. Two, your flip flops are melting. Three, you are aching for poetry (right!?) and something to do. We cannot buy you new chanclas. HOWEVER, we can offer you this: THREE MORE Youth Spotlight Poetry Slams (the ones in which the youth winner takes home $50!), plus workshops, hilarity, locura, and of course, mucha poesía.

Please help spread the word. I am going to be teaching a workshop the next two Saturdays, and there is a slam at Bentley's on the 12th. The workshops are going to be a blast, and of course English / Spanish / Espanglish / any other language is perfectly welcome. The first youth slam went down a couple weeks ago and was a serious success.

We want to see you at these events. Don't be shy!

Hey everybody,
